Prolonged Exposure (PE) is an effective and brief type of therapy that helps people recover from stressful or traumatic experiences. Read on for more info about Prolonged Exposure Therapy and check out the research here.
Who is PE for? Prolonged Exposure is an excellent choice for people who have been through a stressful experience and have symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) (things like flashbacks, negative emotions, and anxiety attacks, difficulty talking about and remembering the experience). PE is successful with teens and adults alike. As a structured form of treatment, sessions stay very focused on reducing PTSD symptoms. Why choose PE? Prolonged Exposure is one of the most researched interventions for PTSD, having been studied in at least 65 randomized clinical trials, and is continuing to be evaluated and optimized by researchers. These trials, along with meta-analyses, suggest that PE produces large treatment effects in regard to PTSD symptom reduction and loss of diagnosis. Another reason to choose PE is because it teaches you how to actually feel your emotions instead of push them away. It is my professional opinion that one of the greatest things you can do for your mental health, relationships and overall wellness is to develop more skill, courage and acceptance around your emotions. Can PE be done online? PE works well in-person or as an online therapy. Online therapy requires a private space, good internet connection and quality lighting so the therapist can accurately watch your reactions during your processing. There are no differences to the treatment when it is conducted online through teleheatlh. Telehealth cuts down on travel time and is a super convenient and safe way to support your mental health needs. Why do I need therapy for trauma? Can't I just get over it? Many people recover just fine from traumatic events-- in fact, recovery is quite natural. There are certain things that can interfere, however, with natural recovery and make it so that your brain is stuck in a loop of unfinished processing. Prolonged Exposure targets your emotional responses to your trauma and uses an organized structure to help clear whatever obstacles are impeding that natural recovery process. Why should I consider Jordan as a therapist? I learned PE directly from its author and participated in special ongoing supervision with other experienced providers to prove my efficacy in delivering this treatment. I have worked for over a decade walking people through their traumatic memories and helping them to finally feel and unleash their powerful emotions about the experience. How long does it take? Prolonged Exposure was designed to be delivered in 8 to 15 90-minute-long sessions, but can be fewer or more sessions to fit an individual's specific needs. Most clients choose to participate in 60-minute-long sessions and see significant improvements after the 5th or 6th session. PE can be conducted weekly, biweekly, or even daily. Treatment length will depend on factors like the nature of the trauma, the survivor's age and state at the time of the event, and current life stressors. After an initial assessment, we will have a better idea of what the process might look like to meet your unique situation and needs. What if PE isn't the right fit for me? Together we'll talk about your needs and make a plan for your healing, whether that involves Prolonged Exposure, another form of therapy, or even no therapy at all! I have training in other evidence-based trauma treatments, and as a specialist in this field, I can be a person that helps you to get on the right path towards feeling better. |
